What Is a Plumbing Emergency?

Not every leak is an emergency, but some problems get worse by the minute. Treat it as urgent when water is spreading and you cannot stop it at a fixture valve, when sewage is coming up into the home, when you have no water at all, or when you smell gas.

Emergency Problems Participating Providers Handle

Burst Pipes

Common in Dallas after hard freezes like February 2021. Water can run inside walls or ceilings before you see it. See pipe repair.

Sewer Backup

Wastewater rising in a tub, shower, or floor drain usually means the main line is blocked. Stop using all water until it is cleared. See sewage backup.

Major Water Leak

A failed supply line, fitting, or slab leak can release a large amount of water quickly. Close the main shutoff and keep away from wet electrical areas.

Overflowing Toilet

Close the supply valve behind the toilet. If it overflows again when other fixtures drain, the main line may be blocked.

Water Heater Leak

Water from a fitting or valve can often be repaired; a tank leaking from its body cannot and can flood a garage or closet. Close the cold supply and turn off gas or power to the unit.

No Water

Could be a city main break, a closed or failed meter valve, or a broken service line on your side of the meter. Check with Dallas Water Utilities for outages first.

Gas Leak

Leave the building first, then call Atmos Energy or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off. A plumber handles gas line repairs only after the utility makes it safe. See gas line repair.

What To Do Before the Plumber Arrives

Find your main shutoff before you need it. In most Dallas homes it is near the front of the house where the line enters, in a garage, or at the meter box near the curb (a meter key may be needed).

1. Shut off the water

Close the main valve, or the fixture or water heater valve if the leak is isolated.

2. Protect people and power

Keep away from water near outlets, panels, and appliances. Shut off breakers to wet areas only if you can do so from a dry spot.

3. Stop using drains during a backup

No flushing, showers, laundry, or dishwasher until the line is cleared.

4. Document the damage

Photos help with insurance claims. Move valuables out of the water path.

How Quickly Can a Plumber Respond?

Response time depends on the plumber who accepts your request, the time of day, weather, and how many emergencies are happening at once. After a hard freeze, for example, demand across Dallas can spike. Ask for an estimated arrival time when the plumber contacts you, and keep the water shut off while you wait.

A plumber’s first job is to stabilize: stop the leak, restore safe use of the system, and assess the cause. The permanent repair may happen on the same visit or a follow-up, depending on parts, access, and permits.

How Much Does Emergency Plumbing Cost in Dallas?

After-hours and emergency work typically costs more than a scheduled visit. Ask before work starts whether there is an emergency dispatch fee, whether it is credited toward the repair, and what the hourly or flat rate is. See our emergency plumber cost guide for published ranges with linked sources, plus the factors that change the price. Figures there are third-party ranges, not quotes.

Dallas Emergency Plumbing FAQs

Is a running toilet an emergency?

Usually not. Close the supply valve behind the toilet and schedule a normal repair. It becomes urgent only if it is overflowing and will not stop.

Can I wait until morning for a small leak?

If you can shut off the water to that fixture or contain the drip, a scheduled visit is often fine and costs less. If water is reaching walls, ceilings, or electrical, call now.

Who do I call if I smell gas?

Leave the building, then call Atmos Energy’s emergency line or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off.

Is emergency service available 24/7?

Availability depends on the plumber who accepts your request. Confirm arrival time and after-hours pricing when they contact you.

Request Emergency Service

Shut off the water first if you can. Then describe what is happening, whether water is still running, and your ZIP code. A licensed local plumber confirms availability, arrival time, and pricing directly with you. Request emergency plumbing help.

Water still running? Shut off the main first, then request help.
