Typical original materials

Many 1940s homes were built with galvanized steel water lines and cast-iron and clay drain and sewer piping. Post-war Dallas neighborhoods from this era often have pier-and-beam or early slab foundations.

Commonly found: galvanized supply, cast-iron drains, clay sewer laterals. "Typical" is not a guarantee; confirm what is in your house.

How it is aging

By now, many have had at least partial repiping. If galvanized remains, low pressure and rust are common complaints.

What to check

  • Exposed supply pipe at the water heater and under sinks (magnet sticks to galvanized; copper is reddish; polybutylene is gray plastic)
  • Water pressure at several fixtures
  • Sewer camera inspection for the drain and lateral
  • Age and venting of the water heater
