Before a freeze (City checklist)

From the Dallas Water Utilities winter guide:

  • Wrap exposed pipes outside or in unheated areas, including the attic
  • Drain and remove garden hoses from outside faucets
  • Insulate outdoor faucets with hard foam covers or cloth
  • Cover foundation vents on pier-and-beam homes
  • Learn how to operate your private shut-off valve

During subfreezing weather

Let hot and cold water drip slowly from inside faucets during a hard freeze, and open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls. Turn off or confirm the freeze sensor on your irrigation system.

Dallas-specific weak spots

Attic water lines, pipes in exterior walls, garage water heaters and lines, and backflow preventers on irrigation systems are the usual failure points here.
