Why gas is tested
A pressure test shows the piping holds without leaking. The City's permitting and inspections division handles gas tests; see the City plumbing, mechanical and gas test page.
Typical sequence
The plumber repairs the line, pressurizes it, the City inspects and approves the test, then Atmos Energy restores service and relights appliances or the homeowner arranges relighting. Test pressure and duration depend on the system and are set by the code and inspector; we do not publish a number.
Safety
If you smell gas, follow Atmos Energy guidance: leave, then call 911 and Atmos from a safe place.
